Our New Phones

I upgraded to a new phones last Wednesday! As usual we made a huge leap... from the slow lane right into the thick of traffic. We'd been talking about smart phones for awhile, but it was the slide out qwerty keyboard on the Epic that moved us from shoppers to buyers.

The review from Engadget helped us make the decision as well so I'm including the video from the review below.

So far I'm really impressed with the Epic. It is easy to use and has incredible features. The keyboard throws me off a little: first, because it slides out from the opposite side as our old phones (LG Rumor); and second, because of the layout. There are a lot more keys on the keyboard - including a full row of numbers, the period and comma - and the keys are set farther apart than I'm used to. It will take a little time to relearn two finger typing!

Mark Lindquist 40-Year Retrospective Opens Friday

I am hoping to be able to go to the Opening of this show on Friday but it may be tricky as all my art-loving friends are out of town this weekend. The Gadsden Arts Center is in Quincy, which is about a half hour drive west of Tallahassee.

The Gadsden Arts Center is honored to host Mark Lindquist, a forty-year retrospective exhibition of the work of this legendary woodturner and wood sculptor. Recipient of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Woodturners and a Fellow of the American Craft Council, Lindquist’s tireless exploration of the expressive possibilities of this medium has helped to define its past, present, and future in the fine art world. In 1995, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum honored Lindquist by hosting his 25-year retrospective exhibition. His work has been acquired by major museums in the United States and Europe including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC), High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA), and Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The exhibition will present the broadest range of Lindquist’s work ever seen in one venue, a major cultural event for our region.

I get regular updates from a blog called Getting to the Point: Katya's Non-Profit Marketing Blog and I really enjoy (and learn a lot from) the information she shares, like this great video from Ben Klasky about the scope of the non-profit sector in the U.S.

The Relay

My hubs and some friends are planning to run in The Relay next spring in California. This is a 200-mile relay race with 36 legs. Each team has 12 members, each of whom run 3 segments. It's the like the CWRU Hudson Relays on steroids! Starting in Napa Valley and running to the Pacific Ocean, The Relay features a run across the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight. It's Saturday April 30th and Sunday May 1st, 2010.

The event races money for Organs R Us which "promotes the need for organ donors. Through walking and running, transplant recipients, candidates, organ donors, donor family members and others have generated $25 million of publicity promoting organ donation. Although started in the San Francisco Bay Area, ORU has grown throughout the US. Through participation in athletic events selected for maximum publicity and fun, this group showcases their fitness proving that organ transplantation saves lives."

Summer at Tiffany

When my Twitter and Panhellenic friend Melanie commented on my Summer Reading Recap 2 post that Summer at Tiffany was her favorite book of the summer, I thought, that's definitely a book to share!

This is the true story of two friends (sorority sisters) who travel from Iowa to New York City to work at Tiffany for the summer while they are in college during the second World War. It really captures the feeling of the time beautifully - I love books that transport you to another time or place. It's a quick and easy read, and one that will stay with you.
